My latest film Skiing on green made it to DOCUDOC 2024!

The 13th edition of the Dokudoc documentary film festival in Maribor officially opens its doors today. After yesterday’s screening of the film Nikola Tesla: Waves of the Future at Maribox, the event moves to its regular location at the Maribor Puppet Theatre, where on the first official day, we will see the Maribor premieres of two notable Slovenian films.

In the film Skiing on green (6:00 PM, LGM), director Haidy Kancler addresses the changes in recreational sports due to climate change. Although skiing has long been considered a national sport in Slovenia, increasingly warmer winters are leaving ski resorts green. These areas are slowly becoming playgrounds for a completely different sport—cycling.

“Since I’m from Maribor, where I grew up with skiing, the story of Maribor’s skiing and the increasingly mild winters, along with the cancellation of mountain bike downhill races, has somewhat ‘irritated’ me,” said Haidy Kancler before today’s premiere. “I couldn’t understand what was happening. What now? Will we ski or not? Will we cycle? At the same time, I’m deeply touched by the issue of climate change, which I believe will leave its mark on society—not just on the economy but on our lives as well.

The story of Maribor’s Pohorje seemed like a perfect central narrative, but since it’s not an isolated case, I looked elsewhere too. For example, to Kočevje, where they still have good winters, to the first night ski resort in Yugoslavia in Ljubljana, and to the Slovenian skiing mecca—Carinthia. I wanted a relevant yet very personal approach, with a touch of humor. The rich archive I combed through on Slovenian Television contributed to this, as well as some personal elements.”
